Herbert Lumber Company has been in continuous operation since 1947. In that sixty year period we have established a reputation second to none. This reputation is based on our continuing commitment to quality, to our employees, to our business partners, to our community, and to sustainable forest practices.
We pride ourselves not only in the quality of raw material we buy but also in the way that we conduct ourselves in each and every transaction we participate in. We can only count a purchase of raw materials a success if it is deemed by both parties to be a success. It is only a success if both parties would be willing to enter into the same agreement a second time. We have always tried to conduct ourselves in a manner that treats any person or entities with respect and as willing partners and will continue to do so. We would expect that those person or entities would enter into agreements with Herbert Lumber with the same commitment in mind.
We remain committed to the quality of raw material, the manner in which it is harvested, and the manner in which the land is treated after harvest. We have and do believe that there are those areas where active management through harvest is not necessary and we have avoided and will avoid purchases in those areas. There are also those individuals and entities that by past practices will not be considered as viable trading partners.
We at Herbert Lumber have long held that we cannot make the raw material any better than it started. That is to say we only make it a different shape. That said, we only manufacture Douglas Fir and we have found no fault with what nature has created and find no need to genetically modify this species for our future needs.
All wood manufactured by Herbert Lumber is grown, harvested, transported, and replanted in a manner that is consistent with the applicable local, state, provincial, federal, tribal, and international laws. Where possible to fit our standards we exceed what is necessary to comply with these laws.
Herbert Lumber Company feels strongly that conversion of forest land to non forest uses is not in the best long term interest of anyone. We strive to purchase wood from those areas that are not being thus converted. We further believe that the planting of native trees provides the most benefit to both the human and natural environment.
Herbert Lumber Company has not only been in business for six decades, we have concentrated on producing a quality product line that is much the same as it was six decades ago when we started. We fully intend to produce that quality product line for the next six decades and the six after that. We can only do that if we commit to the type of forest management we have promoted since 1947.
Toward that end and as an indication of our commitment Herbert Lumber will subject our purchase program to the third party scrutiny of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). As our raw material purchases are a mixture from both FSC certified lands, lands certified through other entities, and lands not certified at this time, we will be selling all products as either FSC certified under the credit system or as FSC controlled. All material currently does and will continue to comply with these rigorous standards.
